An agent that calls a RAP service

Let an agent read a RAP service and propose changes, while a person approves and SAP's own checks decide what actually happens.

The 60-second version

The previous topic showed that a RAP business object is the safe door into SAP logic. This topic walks an agent through that door.

The design has three parts, and each one has a single job:

  1. The agent reads and proposes. It reads blocked sales orders through the RAP service with its own read-only user. When it thinks an order can be released, it writes a proposal into a queue. It cannot change SAP.
  2. A person decides. A credit analyst sees each proposal with its facts and approves or declines it.
  3. SAP checks. Only an approved proposal calls the RAP action, under the analyst's identity. The business object then runs its own authorization checks and validations, and SAP records who made the change.

If the agent is wrong, the analyst catches it. If the analyst is wrong or lacks the authority, SAP catches it. Nobody has to trust the model.

Why it matters to the business

Take the course's running example: sales orders blocked for credit. Each morning an analyst opens every blocked order, checks the customer's exposure against the credit limit and looks for overdue items. Most blocks are small and routine. A few need real judgement.

An agent can do the routine reading and write a short note for each low-risk order: "exposure 2.6% over the limit, no overdue items". The analyst then spends time on the hard cases and approves the routine ones in seconds.

What this design protects you from:

  • A wrong suggestion. The agent proposes; it never releases. A person reviews every change.
  • A change beyond someone's authority. If an analyst approves a release above their limit, SAP refuses it, exactly as it would in the Fiori app.
  • A stale decision. If a colleague changed the order after the agent read it, SAP refuses the change and asks for a fresh look.
  • An untraceable change. SAP records the analyst as the person who changed the order. Your own log records what the agent proposed and who approved it.

The cost: some ABAP work to publish a service an outside caller can use, and a small approval screen. The same service then serves every later agent and app.

How SAP does it

As of October 2026:

  • A RAP service for outside callers. A service binding can publish a business object as OData V2 or V4, either for a user interface or as a Web API, per SAP Learning. SAP's naming pattern marks Web API bindings with _API_.
  • Inbound access. In SAP BTP, ABAP environment, an outside caller reaches the service through a communication scenario that lists the service binding as an inbound service. An administrator then creates a communication system for the caller, an inbound communication user, and a communication arrangement that ties them together and shows the service URL. SAP's tutorial uses a user name and password, and says the steps should also work in S/4HANA Cloud.
  • Whose identity. A communication user is a technical user: every call runs with its rights. SAP's OAuth 2.0 SAML Bearer Assertion tutorial shows the alternative, where the business user's identity is propagated and SAP records that user as the one who made the change.
  • The business object's own checks. RAP enforces authorization in the behavior, per instance and per action, and rejects changes the user may not make. Optimistic concurrency with ETags rejects changes based on outdated data.
  • Joule Studio. SAP's AI golden path (April 2026) says Joule skills reach back-end systems through OData APIs wrapped in Action Projects, using destinations in the BTP cockpit. It recommends confirmation dialogs before any transactional operation, which is the same human approval this topic builds.
  • Agent gateways. SAP's MCP Gateway and the planned Agent Gateway, covered in SAP tools for agents, are the endorsed central routes for agents calling SAP APIs.
  • The free trial. SAP's 2019 trial announcement, the most recent list of trial restrictions we found, lists no Communication Management apps in the ABAP trial. You can build the RAP service there, but not the inbound user an outside agent needs. The hands-on part of this topic therefore uses a local stand-in that behaves like a RAP Web API.

One proposal, from reading to release

Step Who What happens What protects you
1 Agent Reads the blocked orders with its own read-only user The agent's user can't change anything; reads go through SAP's read authorization
2 Agent Writes a proposal with a short note and the version of the order it saw The proposal is a record in a queue, not a change in SAP
3 Analyst Sees the facts and the note, then approves or declines A person decides every change
4 Your app Calls the RAP action as the analyst, with the version the agent saw If the order changed meanwhile, SAP refuses (stale data)
5 SAP Checks the analyst's authorization and runs the validations The analyst can't do more than in Fiori; rules such as "no release with overdue items" hold
6 SAP and your app SAP records the change under the analyst's name; your log records proposal and approval Auditors can trace every change from the agent's reading to the person who approved it

The decision for a leader: insist that every AI design that writes to SAP shows these six steps, and names the identity used in steps 1 and 4.

Questions to ask

  1. Which RAP service, or released SAP API, does the agent call? Is it a Web API binding meant for outside callers, or a Fiori UI service?
  2. Which user does the agent read with, and which user makes the change? Can the agent's own user change anything at all?
  3. Where is the proposal stored, and what does the approver see before deciding?
  4. What happens if the order changes between the agent's reading and the approval?
  5. Which checks run in SAP when the approved change arrives? Are they the same as in the Fiori app?
  6. Can we show, for one changed order, who proposed it, who approved it and what SAP answered?
  7. How do we test that refusals still work after every change to the service or the agent?

Common misconceptions

  • "Once a person approves, the change goes through." Approval is necessary, not sufficient. SAP still checks authorization and business rules, and may refuse.
  • "The agent needs write access to be useful." It needs read access and a way to propose. The write belongs to the person who approves.
  • "A technical user is fine because the agent is ours." A technical user's rights apply to every request. Changes then show the technical user in SAP, not the person who decided.
  • "We can check the rules in the agent's prompt." Rules in a prompt can be ignored or talked around. Rules in the business object apply to every caller.
  • "If the agent read the order a minute ago, the data is current." Someone else may have changed it. The version check exists for exactly this case.

Key terms

All course terms, A to Z, in the glossary

  • Web API binding: a RAP service binding meant for programs rather than a user interface.
  • Communication scenario and arrangement: SAP's objects that allow an outside system to call an inbound service, with a defined user and URL.
  • Communication user: a technical user that an outside system signs in with.
  • User propagation: passing the business user's identity to SAP, so the call runs as that person.
  • Proposal queue: where an agent's suggested changes wait for a person to decide.
  • ETag: a version stamp of a record. A change must quote it, so a change to an outdated version is refused.
  • CSRF token: a short-lived value a caller fetches first and sends with every change, a protection against forged requests.
  • Action Project: a wrapper around an OData API so Joule skills can call it.

Check yourself

Pick one answer for each question. The explanation appears after you choose.

1In this design, what can the agent do on its own?

Answer: A. The agent reads with a read-only user and only writes proposals into a queue. Every change to SAP starts with a person's approval.

2An analyst approves a release above her authority limit. What happens?

Answer: D. The approved change runs under the analyst's identity, so the business object's authorization check applies. Approval does not add rights the analyst doesn't have.

3Why should the change reach SAP under the approver's identity, not a technical user?

Answer: D. With the approver's identity, SAP applies that person's authorizations and records them as the one who made the change. A technical user's rights apply to every request and hide who decided.

4A colleague edits an order after the agent read it but before the analyst approves. What should happen?

Answer: D. The proposal carries the version of the order the agent saw. If the order changed since then, SAP refuses the change, so nobody approves a decision based on outdated facts.

5A partner says the credit rules will be written into the agent's prompt. What is the main concern?

Answer: B. A rule in a prompt is a request to the model, not a control. Rules in the business object apply to every caller, including people and other systems.

6Your team wants to try this with the free ABAP trial. What should you expect?

Answer: D. SAP's trial announcement lists no Communication Management apps in the trial. That is why the hands-on part uses a local stand-in for the outside call.

Mental model: three keys, turned in order

Think of every change as a door with three locks, each held by someone different.

  • The agent's key opens reading only. Its user can read orders and nothing else. Its "write" tools write into your own proposal queue.
  • The approver's key opens the action. Only an approved proposal calls the RAP action, and it calls it as the approver.
  • SAP's guard checks the approver's key. The business object runs authorization, validations and the version check on every call.

No single key is enough. A fooled agent can't release an order. A careless approval still meets SAP's rules. And because the proposal carries the version the agent saw, the approver always approves the order as it was read, not some later version of it.

How it works

The whole flow

sequenceDiagram
  participant A as Agent (AGENT_READER)
  participant S as RAP Web API
  participant Q as Proposal queue
  participant P as Analyst
  A->>S: GET BlockedOrder (read-only user)
  S-->>A: orders, each with an ETag
  A->>Q: propose releaseBlock + note + ETag seen
  P->>Q: review facts, approve
  P->>S: GET with X-CSRF-Token: Fetch
  S-->>P: token
  P->>S: POST releaseBlock, If-Match: ETag seen
  S-->>P: 200 done, or 403 / 400 / 412 with a message

The agent never holds the approver's credentials, and the approval step never asks the model anything.

Reading: small, scoped, versioned

The agent's read tools turn into plain OData GET requests:

GET BlockedOrder?$select=SalesOrder,CustomerName,NetAmount,...&$filter=BlockStatus eq 'Blocked'&$top=20
GET BlockedOrder(SalesOrder='4500012001')

Three habits matter:

  • $select from the catalog. The fields come from the tool catalog you built in ABAP Cloud and RAP for AI builders. Remove a field there and the agent can no longer see it.
  • A filter and a limit. The model gets the blocked orders, not the whole table.
  • The ETag comes back with each record. When a business object uses optimistic concurrency, it has an ETag field, usually a last-changed timestamp, as SAP Learning describes. OData returns it in the ETag response header for a single record and as @odata.etag in JSON.

What the agent's user may read is SAP's decision: CDS access controls filter the rows for each user, per SAP Learning.

Changing: token, version, action

An approved change is a POST to the bound action. In OData V4 the action's full name follows the record's URL, and its parameters go in a JSON body, as the OASIS standard describes:

POST BlockedOrder(SalesOrder='4500012001')/com.example.zrt1_api_blocked_order.releaseBlock
X-CSRF-Token: <token fetched just before>
If-Match: W/"2026-10-09T07:41:02.118000Z"
Content-Type: application/json

{"ReviewNote": "Exposure 256,400.00 EUR is 2.6% over the 250,000.00 EUR limit; no overdue items."}
  • CSRF token. SAP Gateway's documentation describes the pattern: send a GET with the header X-CSRF-Token: Fetch, read the token from the response header, and send it with every modifying request together with the session cookie. Without a valid token, the server answers 403.
  • If-Match. The OData standard lets a client send the ETag it last saw. If the record has changed since, the service answers 412 Precondition Failed and changes nothing. If the service requires an ETag and none is sent, it answers 428 Precondition Required.
  • The action, not a field update. The agent proposes "release this order with this note". It never proposes "set BlockStatus to Released". In RAP, an action can take a parameter defined by an abstract entity, as SAP's RAP100 action does.

What can come back

Answer Meaning What the approval step does
200 with the record Done. The record shows the new status and who changed it Mark the proposal done
400 with a message A validation refused it, for example "customer has overdue items" Show the message; the proposal is refused
401 Sign-in failed Fix the credentials; nothing changed
403 with a message Not authorized for this record or action, or the CSRF token failed Ask someone with the right authority, or decline
412 The record changed since the agent read it Mark the proposal stale; run the agent again
428 The call didn't send an ETag A bug in your client: always send If-Match

Error bodies follow the OData standard: a JSON object with an error member holding code, message and optionally target (such as a field name) and details. The message is what the approver, and the agent on a later run, should see.

Inside the business object

The guard lives in the behavior, as in ABAP Cloud and RAP for AI builders. For this flow it needs three things:

" Sketch: behavior definition lines for the blocked-order business object
" ... implementation type, strict mode and persistence lines omitted ...
define behavior for ZRT1_R_BLOCKEDORDER alias BlockedOrder
lock master
authorization master ( instance )
etag master LocalLastChangedAt
{
  field ( readonly ) BlockStatus, LastChangedBy, LocalLastChangedAt;
  action releaseBlock parameter ZRT1_A_REVIEWNOTE result [1] $self;
  action rejectOrder  parameter ZRT1_A_REASON     result [1] $self;
}
  • authorization master ( instance ): the instance handler decides per order and per action. SAP Learning shows it setting a flag such as %action-... to if_abap_behv=>auth-unauthorized to deny an action.
  • etag master LocalLastChangedAt: per SAP Learning, the ETag field must change on every create or update; a last-changed timestamp that the framework fills is the recommended choice. The projection exposes it with use etag.
  • The action handler checks the business rules, such as overdue items, and reports any refusal in failed with a message in reported, as RAP100 does.

Two identities, on purpose

The agent The approver
Signs in as Its own user with a read-only role The person who approved, or a user that carries their identity
May read What the read role and CDS access controls allow Not needed by the agent flow
May change Nothing in SAP What their own authorizations allow
Shows in SAP's change record Never Always

If both steps used one technical user with change rights, a fooled agent could release orders, and SAP would record the technical user, not the person who decided. Agent permissions and SAP authorizations covers delegated identities in depth.

Why the proposal carries the ETag

The approver sees the facts the agent saw. If the approval step re-read the order and used the newest ETag, it would apply the agent's proposal to an order that may have changed, and the approver would be approving something they never saw. Using the ETag from the proposal makes SAP refuse in exactly that case.

Build it yourself: agent, approval queue and drill

You will run an agent against a local stand-in for a RAP Web API. The agent reads blocked orders and queues release proposals. You then approve them as two different people and watch SAP's checks decide. Finally, a drill proves that each check refuses what it should.

Before you start: complete Set up your computer for this course and Set up for Unit 13. Step 3 uses rap_contract.py from ABAP Cloud and RAP for AI builders; if you skipped that topic, the agent uses a built-in tool list instead.

What you need

  • Your orchestrate-course folder with Python and .venv from Unit 1.
  • Nothing else for Steps 1 to 10: the script uses only Python's standard library, no account, no key and no network beyond your own computer. Free.
  • For the optional Step 11: the SAP AI Core trial and .env lines from Set up for Unit 5. Small per-request charge, or free within the trial's limits.
  • Time: about 45 minutes.

Step 1: Open your course folder and turn on the virtual environment

  1. Open VS Code, choose File > Open Folder, and open orchestrate-course.

  2. Open a terminal: Terminal > New Terminal.

  3. If the prompt doesn't start with (.venv), turn it on:

    • Windows (PowerShell):

      .venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1
    • macOS / Linux:

      source .venv/bin/activate
  4. Make sure the folder for this unit's files exists:

    • Windows (PowerShell):

      New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force unit13\rap
    • macOS / Linux:

      mkdir -p unit13/rap

Step 2: Save the script

  1. In VS Code, create a file unit13/rap_agent.py.
  2. Paste in the code below and save.
"""An agent that reads a RAP service, proposes changes, and only a person's approval calls the action.

Everything runs against a local stand-in for a RAP OData V4 Web API service: made-up blocked
sales orders, CSRF tokens, ETags, instance authorization and validations, all on your own computer.

Commands (run from your course folder):
  python unit13/rap_agent.py metadata                 save the stand-in's $metadata for rap_contract.py
  python unit13/rap_agent.py run --sample the agent reads orders and proposes (free stand-in model)
  python unit13/rap_agent.py run --model MODEL_NAME the same with a real model through SAP AI Core
  python unit13/rap_agent.py approve --as ANALYST_ANNA a person approves or declines each proposal
  python unit13/rap_agent.py colleague-edit 4500012001 someone else changes an order in the meantime
  python unit13/rap_agent.py drill test that SAP-side checks refuse what they should
  python unit13/rap_agent.py log summarise the audit trail
  python unit13/rap_agent.py show print the orders as the stand-in holds them now
  python unit13/rap_agent.py reset start again with fresh data
Add --trace to see every HTTP request and response.

The stand-in path uses only Python's standard library. --model also needs sap-ai-sdk-gen and
python-dotenv, and the AICORE_ lines in .env from "Set up for Unit 5".

Step 3: Build the tool catalog from the stand-in's contract

The stand-in publishes OData metadata like a real RAP service. Save it, then review it with last topic's script. That writes the tool catalog the agent will read.

python unit13/rap_agent.py metadata
python unit13/rap_contract.py --metadata unit13/rap/standin_metadata.xml

On macOS or Linux, use python3 if python isn't found.

The end of the output should look like this:

Review

This service is a Web API without draft, so there are no draft actions and no IsActiveEntity key. Every field is read-only for callers: changes happen only through the two actions. This replaces the catalog of last topic's made-up draft service.

If you don't have rap_contract.py, skip the second command. Step 5 then says it uses the built-in list.

Step 4: Look at the orders

python unit13/rap_agent.py show
Order Customer Amount Exposure Limit Overdue Status Last changed by
4500012001  Nordwind Retail     18400.00    256400.00    250000.00       0.00 Blocked   SAP_SYSTEM

4500012004  Kessel Maschinen     5200.00     84100.00     80000.00       0.00 Blocked   SAP_SYSTEM

All data is made up. The stand-in keeps it in unit13/rap/standin_state.json. It knows three users: AGENT_READER (reads only), ANALYST_ANNA (may act on orders up to 25,000 EUR) and MANAGER_MAX (no limit).

Step 5: Run the agent

python unit13/rap_agent.py run --sample

--sample uses a free scripted stand-in for the model. It follows the same rule as the real model's instructions: propose a release only if exposure is at most 10% over the limit and nothing is overdue.

Tools offered, from tool_catalog.json: list_BlockedOrder, get_BlockedOrder, propose_releaseBlock, propose_rejectOrder
Fields the agent may read: SalesOrder, SoldToParty, CustomerName, NetAmount, Currency, CreditLimit, CreditExposure, OverdueAmount, BlockStatus, ReviewNote, LastChangedBy, LocalLastChangedAt

  step 1  list_BlockedOrder     {}                                           -> 4 orders
  step 2  get_BlockedOrder      {"SalesOrder": "4500012001"}                 -> ok
  step 3  get_BlockedOrder      {"SalesOrder": "4500012002"}                 -> ok
  step 4  get_BlockedOrder      {"SalesOrder": "4500012003"}                 -> ok
  step 5  get_BlockedOrder      {"SalesOrder": "4500012004"}                 -> ok
  step 6  propose_releaseBlock  {"SalesOrder": "4500012001", "ReviewNote"... -> queued P001
  step 7  propose_releaseBlock  {"SalesOrder": "4500012002", "ReviewNote"... -> queued P002
  step 8  propose_releaseBlock  {"SalesOrder": "4500012004", "ReviewNote"... -> queued P003

Agent: Summary: 4500012003 left blocked for the analyst: overdue items of 12,750.00. 4500012001 proposed as P001. 4500012002 proposed as P002. 4500012004 proposed as P003.

3 proposal(s) waiting in unit13/rap/proposals.json. Nothing in SAP has changed.

Run show again: every order is still Blocked. Open unit13/rap/proposals.json to see what a proposal holds: the action, the note, the facts and etag_seen, the version the agent read.

If the propose steps end in ERROR A proposal for ... is already waiting for approval, you ran the agent twice. That refusal is deliberate: one pending proposal per order. Run python unit13/rap_agent.py reset and start again from this step.

Step 6: A colleague changes an order

Before anyone approves, a colleague updates order 4500012004 in another app:

python unit13/rap_agent.py colleague-edit 4500012004
COLLEAGUE_CHRIS changed order 4500012004. New version: W/"2026-10-09T07:42:15.500261Z"

Your timestamp will differ. The order now has a new ETag. Proposal P003 still holds the old one.

Step 7: Approve as the analyst

python unit13/rap_agent.py approve --as ANALYST_ANNA

The script shows each proposal and waits. Type y and press Enter for each of the three:

P001 releaseBlock on order 4500012001 (Nordwind Retail)
    amount 18,400.00 EUR, exposure 256,400.00 of limit 250,000.00, overdue 0.00
    ReviewNote: Exposure 256,400.00 EUR is 2.6% over the 250,000.00 EUR limit; no overdue items.
    Approve as ANALYST_ANNA? Type y (yes), n (no) or s (skip): y
    SAP: done. Order 4500012001 is now Released, last changed by ANALYST_ANNA.

P002 releaseBlock on order 4500012002 (Alpen Bau)
    amount 42,000.00 EUR, exposure 323,000.00 of limit 300,000.00, overdue 0.00
    ReviewNote: Exposure 323,000.00 EUR is 7.7% over the 300,000.00 EUR limit; no overdue items.
    Approve as ANALYST_ANNA? Type y (yes), n (no) or s (skip): y
    SAP refused (HTTP 403): Not authorized: User ANALYST_ANNA may act on orders up to 25,000.00 EUR; order 4500012002 is 42,000.00 EUR. Ask someone with a higher limit, e.g. --as MANAGER_MAX, or decline.

P003 releaseBlock on order 4500012004 (Kessel Maschinen)
    amount 5,200.00 EUR, exposure 84,100.00 of limit 80,000.00, overdue 0.00
    ReviewNote: Exposure 84,100.00 EUR is 5.1% over the 80,000.00 EUR limit; no overdue items.
    Approve as ANALYST_ANNA? Type y (yes), n (no) or s (skip): y
    SAP refused (HTTP 412): Sales order 4500012004 was changed by COLLEAGUE_CHRIS after you read it. Read it again. Run the agent again so it proposes on current data.

Three approvals, three different outcomes:

  • P001 went through, and SAP records Anna, not the agent.
  • P002 was refused by authorization. Anna's approval doesn't give her rights she doesn't have. The proposal stays pending for someone with a higher limit.
  • P003 was refused by the version check. Anna approved what the agent read, but the order had changed. Nothing was overwritten.

Step 8: Approve the larger order as the manager, and watch the HTTP

--trace prints every request and response. Type y once:

python unit13/rap_agent.py --trace approve --as MANAGER_MAX
P002 releaseBlock on order 4500012002 (Alpen Bau)
    amount 42,000.00 EUR, exposure 323,000.00 of limit 300,000.00, overdue 0.00
    ReviewNote: Exposure 323,000.00 EUR is 7.7% over the 300,000.00 EUR limit; no overdue items.
    Approve as MANAGER_MAX? Type y (yes), n (no) or s (skip): y
    > GET / {'X-CSRF-Token': 'Fetch'}
    < 200 {'X-CSRF-Token': '8b6ph_q3_ILdFdAj9PViFA'}
    > POST /BlockedOrder(SalesOrder='4500012002')/com.example.zrt1_api_blocked_order.releaseBlock {'X-CSRF-Token': '8b6ph_q3_ILdFdAj9PViFA', 'If-Match': 'W/"2026-10-09T07:41:01.907207Z"'} body={"ReviewNote": "Exposure 323,000.00 EUR is 7.7% over the 300,000.00 EUR limit; no overdue items."}
    < 200 {'ETag': 'W/"2026-10-09T07:42:48.771593Z"'}
    SAP: done. Order 4500012002 is now Released, last changed by MANAGER_MAX.

The token and timestamps will differ. These are the two calls from How it works: fetch a token, then POST the action with the token and the ETag the agent saw. The response carries the order's new ETag.

Step 9: Read the audit trail

python unit13/rap_agent.py log
2026-10-09T07:41:01 proposed P001 releaseBlock on 4500012001 by the agent
2026-10-09T07:41:01 proposed P002 releaseBlock on 4500012002 by the agent
2026-10-09T07:41:01 proposed P003 releaseBlock on 4500012004 by the agent
2026-10-09T07:42:31  approved  P001 by ANALYST_ANNA -> HTTP 200
2026-10-09T07:42:31 approved P002 by ANALYST_ANNA -> HTTP 403 Not authorized: User ANALYST_ANNA may act on orders up to 25,000.00 EUR; order 4500012002 is 42,000.00 EUR.
2026-10-09T07:42:31 approved P003 by ANALYST_ANNA -> HTTP 412 Sales order 4500012004 was changed by COLLEAGUE_CHRIS after you read it. Read it again.
2026-10-09T07:42:48  approved  P002 by MANAGER_MAX -> HTTP 200

Totals
  agent runs                         1
  approved, SAP answered HTTP 200 2
  approved, SAP answered HTTP 403 1
  approved, SAP answered HTTP 412 1
  proposals                          3
  tool calls                         8

Your log records the agent's side: what it read, what it proposed and who approved. SAP's own record shows the person who made each change. Run show to see ANALYST_ANNA and MANAGER_MAX in the last column, and 4500012004 still blocked. You need both records to answer an auditor.

Step 10: Run the drill

The drill calls the stand-in directly with nine requests that should each be refused or accepted. It uses a scratch copy of the data, so your orders stay as they are.

python unit13/rap_agent.py drill

9 of 9 checks passed.

The first line is the one that matters most: even if the agent were tricked into calling the action itself, its own user can't change anything. The drill is the kind of test you would run against a real service after every transport.

Step 11 (optional): Run the agent with a real model

This replaces the scripted stand-in with a model from your generative AI hub. It needs sap-ai-sdk-gen, python-dotenv and the five AICORE_ lines in .env from Set up for Unit 5. Use a model name from your generative AI hub catalog that supports tool calling.

  1. Start from fresh data:

    python unit13/rap_agent.py reset
  2. Run the agent with your model name in place of MODEL_NAME:

    python unit13/rap_agent.py run --model MODEL_NAME
  3. Compare its proposals with Step 5. A good run proposes 4500012001, 4500012002 and 4500012004, and leaves 4500012003 for the analyst. A model may batch several tool calls into one step or word its notes differently. If it proposes 4500012003 anyway, approve it as MANAGER_MAX and watch SAP refuse it with the overdue-items message: the guard holds even when the model and the approver both get it wrong.

Step 12: Save your work in Git

The stand-in's data file changes on every run, so keep it out of Git:

  • Windows (PowerShell):

    Add-Content .gitignore "unit13/rap/standin_state.json"
  • macOS / Linux:

    echo "unit13/rap/standin_state.json" >> .gitignore

Then commit:

git add .gitignore unit13/rap_agent.py unit13/rap
git commit -m "Unit 13: agent proposes RAP actions, a person approves, SAP checks"

Check with git status first: you must not see .env.

How the code works

Part of the script What it does
USERS, SEED, METADATA The stand-in's users with their limits, the made-up orders, and the OData V4 metadata it publishes
StandIn The stand-in RAP Web API. do_GET serves metadata, lists and single orders with ETags, and hands out CSRF tokens. do_POST checks user, token, If-Match, authorization and validations, in that order, then runs the action
ODataClient What any caller does: sign in, fetch_csrf(), request() with cookies, and call_action() with If-Match. One client is one identity
load_catalog() Reads tool_catalog.json and offers only the tools and fields it lists
Tools The agent's tools. Reads use the agent's user. propose_ tools check the input, read the current ETag, and write a proposal. They never call an action
SampleBrain and RealBrain The free scripted stand-in model and the real model through SAP's orchestration service. Both offer decide() and observe()
run_agent() The agent loop: ask the brain, run the tool, log it, return the result, up to 15 steps
cmd_approve() The human step. Shows facts, asks, then calls the action as the approver with the ETag from the proposal, and records SAP's answer
cmd_drill() Nine requests with expected answers, on a scratch copy of the data
cmd_log() Reads audit.jsonl and prints the trail with totals

The stand-in imitates a RAP service's behavior closely enough to teach the calls. It is not SAP: a real system's messages, check order and some status codes may differ.

If something goes wrong

The SAP way

As of October 2026, these are the SAP pieces for each part of the flow.

Publishing the RAP service for an outside caller

  1. A Web API binding. Create a service binding of type OData V4 as a Web API, named with _API_ per SAP Learning's pattern. Prefer a non-draft business object with purpose-built actions for agents, as discussed in ABAP Cloud and RAP for AI builders.
  2. A communication scenario. In ADT, create a communication scenario and add the service binding on the Inbound tab. SAP's tutorial adds the binding through Browse, which appends a suffix (G4BA for OData V4), then Save and Publish Locally.
  3. Communication system, user and arrangement. In the Fiori launchpad's Communication Management apps, an administrator creates a communication system for the caller, an inbound user (the tutorial uses User name and password with Propose password), and a communication arrangement for the scenario. The arrangement shows the service URL.
  4. Publishing for real. Publishing in ADT is local and for testing, per SAP Learning. For OData V4, activating the binding registers a service group; in some client settings SAP Learning says to publish it through SAP Gateway Service Administration (/IWFND/V4_ADMIN).

Whose identity reaches SAP

  • Communication user (technical). Simple, and what SAP's inbound tutorial uses. Every call runs with that user's rights. Use it for the agent's read-only access, never for approved changes.
  • User propagation. SAP's OAuth 2.0 SAML Bearer Assertion tutorial propagates the business user from BTP ABAP environment into S/4HANA Cloud, public edition. The call fails with an authorization error if the user lacks the needed business role, and the created record shows the business user. That is the behavior you want for the approval step.
  • BTP applications. A Python service on BTP usually reaches SAP through a destination with principal propagation, as in Grounding on SAP data with authorizations. The agent's own identity and the approver's are designed as in Agent permissions and SAP authorizations.

Joule Studio

SAP's AI golden path for Joule skills (updated April 2026) describes the same shape: wrap OData APIs in an Action Project, reach the back end through a destination configured in the BTP cockpit, and use confirmation dialogs before any create, update or delete. A RAP Web API with narrow actions is a good fit for such an Action Project. The confirmation is the approval step, and the business object's checks still decide.

Sketch: the client against a real system

# SKETCH: the same ODataClient, pointed at a real RAP Web API instead of the stand-in.
import os
from dotenv import load_dotenv

load_dotenv()
base = os.environ["RAP_SERVICE_URL"] # the service URL shown in the communication arrangement, ending in /
reader = ODataClient(base, os.environ["RAP_READ_USER"])
reader.auth = "Basic " + base64.b64encode(
    ("%s:%s" % (os.environ["RAP_READ_USER"], os.environ["RAP_READ_PASSWORD"])).encode()).decode()
# Reads for the agent: reader.request("GET", "BlockedOrder?$top=5")
# Approved changes: build a second client whose Authorization header carries the approver's
# propagated token (for example from a BTP destination with principal propagation), never the reader.

The real URL is longer than the stand-in's: copy it from the arrangement. Check the exact entity set, namespace and action names in your service's $metadata.

Licensing notes

  • Everything in Build it yourself is free. The optional real model costs generative AI hub usage in SAP AI Core.
  • A productive BTP ABAP environment or S/4HANA Cloud system is licensed separately. Ask your SAP account team.
  • Joule Studio pricing and trial terms change often. Check the current terms before planning, as noted in Joule and Joule Studio.

Build vs. SAP

Situation Use Why
Learning the calls, testing approval logic The stand-in in this topic Free, offline, and every refusal is easy to trigger
An agent in Joule that business users already use Joule Studio with an Action Project over the RAP Web API SAP's own route, with built-in confirmation
Your own Python agent on BTP Your agent, a destination to the RAP Web API, and your own approval screen Full control over the agent and its evaluation
Several agents and teams calling SAP APIs An agent or MCP gateway in front of the API (SAP tools for agents) Central policy, logging and identity
SAP already has an approval workflow for the change Route the proposal into SAP's workflow One approval process, not two
No RAP service exists yet Build the business object first (ABAP Cloud and RAP for AI builders) The guard has to exist before an agent uses the door

Production concerns

Security and SAP authorizations

  • The agent's user reads only. Give it a role with read access to the service and no actions. Test that with the first drill check on every release.
  • Approved changes carry the approver's identity. Use user propagation or a token for the approver. A shared technical user with change rights undoes the design.
  • Proposals are not commands. The approval step reads the proposal file, but SAP decides. Keep the proposal store writable only by the agent service and readable by approvers.
  • Text is data. Order fields such as ReviewNote can contain injected instructions (Prompt injection and tool poisoning). The worst they can do here is produce a bad proposal, which a person and SAP's checks then stop.
  • Secrets. Communication user passwords and tokens live in a secret store or .env, never in code or the proposal file.

Evaluation

  • Proposal quality. Measure how many proposals analysts approve unchanged and how many SAP refuses. A rising refusal rate means the agent's view or rules drift from SAP's.
  • The drill as a regression test. Run the refusal matrix against a test system after every transport of the business object and every change to the agent.
  • Compare with the analyst's own decisions on a labelled set of past orders, as in LLM evaluation fundamentals.

Cost

  • Reads are cheap; keep $top and $select tight so the model reads less.
  • The model call is the main running cost. One agent run per batch of orders, not per order view.
  • The ABAP service and its checks are a one-time investment that every later agent reuses.

Operations

  • Stale proposals. Expire proposals after a set time, and treat 412 as "run the agent again", not as an error to retry.
  • Tokens. Fetch a CSRF token per approval session and refetch it when you get 403 with a required-token answer.
  • Version the catalog. A new field or action in the service is a contract change. Rebuild the catalog with rap_contract.py and re-run the drill.
  • Monitor both logs. Your audit log shows proposals and approvals; SAP's change records show who changed what. Reconcile them regularly.

Clean core

The whole flow uses a released-style door: your RAP Web API in ABAP Cloud, or a released SAP API. Nothing writes to tables directly, and no business rule lives only in the agent. That keeps the design at clean core level A or B, as described in ABAP Cloud and RAP for AI builders.

Pitfalls

  • Giving the agent the approver's credentials "so it can finish the job". Then any prompt injection can release orders.
  • Re-reading the ETag at approval time. The approver then approves a version they never saw. Use the ETag from the proposal.
  • Retrying a 412. It is not a network glitch. The data changed; the proposal must be redone.
  • Treating 403 as a bug. It may be the business object doing its job. Show the message to the approver.
  • One service for Fiori and agents. A draft-enabled UI service forces the agent through draft steps. Give agents a Web API with narrow actions.
  • A generic update tool next to the actions. The model will find it. Offer only the actions.
  • No refusal tests. Without the drill, you learn about a missing authorization check from an auditor.

Exercise

Add a second analyst with a higher limit, prove the new rule with the drill, and let that analyst approve everything the agent proposes. The audit trail becomes part of your Unit 14 portfolio.

Before you start: finish Build it yourself above, at least Steps 2 to 5.

  1. Open unit13/rap_agent.py in VS Code.

  2. Find this line (use Ctrl+F on Windows or Cmd+F on macOS):

        "MANAGER_MAX": {"read": True, "act_limit": Decimal("1000000000")},
  3. Add a new line directly below it:

        "ANALYST_BEN": {"read": True, "act_limit": Decimal("50000")},
  4. Find this line in cmd_drill:

            max_ = ODataClient(base, "MANAGER_MAX")
  5. Add a new line directly below it:

            ben = ODataClient(base, "ANALYST_BEN")
  6. Find this line, also in cmd_drill:

            checks.append(("Release the same order twice", 400,
  7. Add these two lines directly above it, with the same indentation:

            checks.append(("Ben releases an order within his limit", 200,
                           ben.call_action("4500012002", "releaseBlock", note, etag("4500012002"), ben.fetch_csrf())))
  8. Save, then run the drill:

    python unit13/rap_agent.py drill

    The last line should say 10 of 10 checks passed.

  9. Start fresh, run the agent, and approve all three proposals as Ben by typing y three times:

    python unit13/rap_agent.py reset
    python unit13/rap_agent.py run --sample
    python unit13/rap_agent.py approve --as ANALYST_BEN
  10. Print the trail:

    python unit13/rap_agent.py log
  11. Commit:

    git add unit13
    git commit -m "Unit 13: second analyst, drill check and approved run"

Done when the drill reports 10 of 10 checks passed. and the last three approved lines in log show ANALYST_BEN -> HTTP 200.

1Why does the agent's propose_releaseBlock tool write to a queue instead of calling the RAP action?

Answer: A. The agent's tools may read SAP and propose, never change it. Only the approval step calls the action, under the approver's identity, so a wrong or manipulated proposal stops at a person.

2What two values does the approval step send with the POST to the action, besides the approver's sign-in?

Answer: B. Modifying requests need a CSRF token fetched with X-CSRF-Token: Fetch. The If-Match header quotes the ETag the agent saw, so SAP refuses the change if the order has moved on since.

3The approval step gets HTTP 412 for a proposal. What should your code do?

Answer: B. 412 means the record changed since it was read, and SAP changed nothing. Retrying or swapping in the new ETag would apply an approval to data nobody reviewed.

4In the behavior definition, which line lets the business object refuse an action for one specific order?

Answer: B. Instance authorization lets the handler decide per record and per action, for example denying an action above the user's limit. The ETag line handles versions, readonly protects fields, and locking prevents parallel edits.

5Why does the drill's first check, the agent's user calling releaseBlock, matter most?

Answer: C. Prompt injection or a bad model could make the agent try to call the action directly. If its own user is refused, the worst outcome is a bad proposal that a person sees.

6A teammate suggests one technical user with change rights for both reading and approved changes. What is the problem?

Answer: D. SAP applies and records the rights of whoever signs in. With one technical user, a fooled agent could change data, and the change record names the technical user rather than the approver.

7Your service is a draft-enabled Fiori UI service. What should you give the agent?

Answer: C. Draft steps are UI plumbing and make an agent's calls fragile. A Web API with purpose-built actions keeps each call one business step with its own checks; table access is clean core level D.

8You can't test with a real SAP system yet. Which part of this topic still gives you confidence in the design?

Answer: C. The drill checks every refusal the design relies on: read-only agent, token, version, authorization and validations. Run the same matrix against a real test system once you have one.
